Drawing Anime & Manga Faces Viewed From Below Hard Angles

How to Draw Digitally for Beginners in Manga Studio 5/Clip Studio Paint Part 1

This tutorial is a bit advanced, but if you are ready for it, go for it. This tutorial explains how to draw faces from angles that you dont typically see in manga and anime.

One of those is the one where the viewpoint is below the chin, making the chin look big and other features like eyes, small.

The reason why you dont see these too much in the manga is that in manga art, the chin is usually very pointy, aesthetic, or downright beautiful and when you view that from below, you will have to draw the chin based on realism.

Its pretty hard to draw a chin that is pointy when viewed below. It just doesnt work, so in these instances, you cant draw so much in manga and anime style but have to incorporate realism to it.

Which also means that you have to get into the mature style of manga and anime heads.

Coloration Shadow And Depth

My character Shiro still looks rather flat and two-dimensional. I want to change this quickly with the shading. Shading is an essential part of manga drawing.

Tip: When shading, you should be aware of the direction, angle and strength of your light source. Also, what kind of light the shadow creates can be important for your drawing.

For shading I proceed as follows: I create a clipped layer or a layer with a clipping mask on the layer of the respective color area. Now I can easily draw the shadows with a darker color without having to take care that I paint beyond the area. By going darker and darker in color, I work out the deepest parts. On Shiros dress, you can see the different levels here. You can also color and shade your background in the same way. It doesnt matter which area you shade first.

But don´t worry, even though it may sound like a lot to learn, you don´t have to master all of them. A basic understanding is enough to start out. The rest will come with time and practice!

So what fundamentals do you have to learn, when you want to draw Anime?

Background And Foreground: Creating A Mood And Atmosphere

At this point, if you are creating a background and/or foreground, you can begin sketching some elements. Because you are working digitally, you will do this on a separate layer. To help create shadow and light relations, work with your background. Create a layer above your rough sketch while in multiply mode.

Now, you can choose where your shadows fall in a color that is lighter than that of your sketch. You can add a soft light mode layer with some white, which will bring in light. You can now plan your drawing a little bit better, as your sketch will still be visible. While learning to draw manga, the perfect background and the right atmosphere is as important as the character itself!

A helpful tip is to keep order by using folders within your layers tab. This will help you to identify individal layers quickly when you need to make an edit or adjustment.

Anime Line Art

Your anime figure should now be taking shape! Once your character has been well prepared, you will start to clean it up with line art contours. Your sketch will be much wilder-looking, so just go over the most important lines. The result will be a far cleaner drawing.

A useful tip here is to use strokes in varying lengths, which will help to liven up your linework.

What this means is that you should use lines of varying thicknesses to create more nuance in your artwork. Using omissions can also look really good, especially later on when they start to complement the colored-in areas.

Use An Arrow To Place Key Facial Features

After blocking out the head I decide which direction the character is facing. Treating the head as a 3D shape, I draw a horizontal line that curves along the surface. When I draw this line I bear in mind whether the head is tilted upwards or downwards, or facing left or right. To fix the direction of the head then Ill draw an upwards pointing arrow . This helps me locate where the nose bridge meets the root of the nose. Once this key location of the face has been identified, I can quickly paint and sketch in the centreline for the face, eyes, eyebrows, mouth and chin .

Place & Draw The Eyes

Basic Anime Face Tutorial by fluffys

Bigger and wider eyes tend to make characters look younger. For an older anime characters draw the eyes vertically narrower and with slightly smaller irises/pupils in relation to the rest of the eye.

To position the eyes you can use the horizontal line made though the middle of the head in the previous step. Draw them directly below it.

For the front view draw the eyes roughly far enough apart that you can fit another eye in between them.

You can see all of the drawing steps for the eyes in the example above however you should finish the entire drawing of the face before adding color. You can simply come back to this example if you need to when you are working on the last step of the tutorial

Drawing Anime Hands Proportions

A quick tutorial of drawing anime characters digitally / Process and Techniques

If youre familiar with my tutorials, you know that I am not a big proponent of learning exact proportions for everything. Proportions will change depending on what you want to draw. Proportions change given the perspective and foreshortening of the subject. Over time you must learn to gauge proportions and correct based on what you are drawing. However, there are a couple of rules that are very helpful in drawing the hand and we can use them for drawing anime hands.
