Luckily, the Avatar world offers the MMO lots of valuable options. For instance, The Legend of Korra‘s general time period seems worth exploring in an MMO, thanks to its complicated politics and advanced technology. Alternatively, the Avatar MMO could focus on a time long before Avatar: The Last Airbender, putting the era of Avatar Kyoshi or another earlier Avatar in the spotlight for once.
It’s great to hear that Avatar: The Last Airbender is back in action. The show was a cultural heavyweight in the early 2000s and remains beloved to this day. It’s even better to hear that Avatar Studios is interested in telling new stories in the Avatar world, rather than relying on retellings of the original Avatar. Hopefully, the IP’s future is defined by creative projects that build on top of the established lore by trying out new time periods. The upcoming RPG and MMORPG are two particularly good opportunities to uncover new details of the Avatar world.

The Tournament Of Power: Earthbender Fights Pro
Tournaments are a staple in shonen anime, especially when there’s a ton of characters with a ton of power to show off. When done right, a tournament is also a great excuse to help characters show “hidden power” or even evolve. At its core, a straightforward brawl becomes less confusing than a pure narrative arc. In turn, it makes sense for Avatar to take some cues with this trope.
Granted, it’s Aang’s journey to find an Earthbending teacher that brings him in a short stint in an Earthbender tournament. Moreover, it’s The Legend of Korra that really had a formal tournament arc in the form of Pro-Bending. While creators have not specifically mentioned following anime for these tournament stories, the medium certainly has a history of following this trend.

The popular Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series has seen a few adaptations, from M. Night Shyamalan’s 2010 live-action flop to animated sequel series The Legend of Korra to an upcoming Netflix live-action show. Now, 15 years since the cartoon premiered on Nickelodeon, an animated film is in the works, and it’ll be made by a new division of Nickelodeon dedicated to creating more Airbender content.
ViacomCBS announced development of the animated movie at its virtual presentation for upcoming streaming service Paramount Plus on Wednesday. Original series creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko are co-chief officers at the newly launched Avatar Studios, so they can keep a close eye on the animated movie’s development. The pair departed the Netflix project due to creative differences.

In the anime community, it has been long debated if Avatar The Last Airbender can be considered an anime. In my personal opinion, Avatar cannot be considered an anime due to some important factors anime must-have.
The first being that all anime must originate in Japan. Seeing that Avatar was written and produced in the United States, it fails to meet this important factor. Leaving Avatar is better classified as a cartoon.
Secondly, all anime just originally be voiced in Japanese, seeing that it comes from Japan. Avatar The Last Airbender however was not voiced in Japanese, but instead was voiced in English. The show does not even have a Japanese dubbed option.
Next it important to consider that most animes are based on mangas. A Manga is a Japanese graphic novel or comic book style type of writing, mostly seen written for older teens or young adults. While Avatar was not based on a manga, after the creation of the show a line of graphic novels was released, entailing not only the time during the show but years after as well.
I believe it is also important to point out some key distinctions between anime and cartoons.
There is also a significant difference in characteristics between anime and cartoons. Meaning that the way the show is drawn and illustrated is quite different. Cartoons tend to be a lot more soft and smooth lines, while anime tends to be a lot more boxy and rough.
