Since August 14, 2020, The Legend of Korra is available for streaming on Netflix in the United States.
All episodes of the series have also been released through digital download services, DVD and Blu-ray formats. The DVD releases contain extra features such as audio commentary from the creators, cast and crew for some episodes, and the Blu-ray releases contain commentary for additional episodes.

Character Designs And Animations
Anyone who has seen an episode of Avatar will immediately notice the shows distinctive Westernized character designs. However, astute viewers may note that a few modifications to Aang and the gangs character designs and animation styles make them reminiscent of another popular anime: FLCL.
Despite its brief six-episode run, FLCLs slice-of-life narrative and exhilarating action were enough to captivate the majority of viewers. In fact, creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino confirmed that FLCL inspired Avatars animation and character design to some degree. Additionally, Avatar director Giancarlo Volpe stated that the team was required to watch FLCL throughout the shows development.
Airbender Brilliantly Deconstructed Colonialism Korra May Undermine Its Work Even As Its Themes Are More Complex Than Ever
Because Airbenders time frame was roughly analogous to the mid-19th century, the creators decided to place Korra in a more technologically advanced era. So they pushed its setting forward about two generations, time-stamping its alternate universe somewhere around 1920 and infusing it with a steampunk-fantasy vibe. Where Airbender had been set in a largely rural world with only minimal technological development, Korra mostly took place in urban settings.
Korras setting is beautiful and innovative, but its also come under fire for having racist overtones. In a recent Medium essay, writer Jeannette Ng criticized the way Korra leans into a heavily Americanized version of the future. In the piece, she points out many ways in which the show jettisons authentic cultural traditions in favor of embracing white industrialized civilization, all while arguably failing to explore the lingering traces that colonialism has left on the world of Airbender.For instance, its focal city, Republic City, was drawn from an odd combination of Shanghai, Manhattan, and Vancouver, with its culturally Chinese signifiers largely thrust into the background or rarely acknowledged.

Everything about how writes the future of the cultures feels wrong and insulting, Ng told me. It is obvious now when comparing it with The Last Airbender that it just stopped really using cultural shorthands from other cultures as part of its storytelling.

Is Avatar: The Legend Of Korra An Animated Series Or A Film
Avatar: The Legend Of Korra is not an anime since it was mostly produced in the United States. It is not drawn in a traditional manner, and it was not created in Japan in order to be classified as anime. Despite having anime characteristics, the show was developed in the Nickolodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California.
Their lack of poetic discourse and metaphorical language is also a disqualifier. Avatar falls short or underperforms in each of these categories. Second, since anime is created in Japan, it must be spoken in that language. Avatar The Legend Of Korra, on the other hand, was not voiced in Japanese, but in English. The Japanese dub isnt even available for the show.
Due to the way some views have polluted the anime waters, viewers must grasp the distinction between true anime and affected programs. This was evident in a recent Netflix documentary called Enter The Anime, which was a big letdown for anime fans like myself.
While it is not a genuine depiction of anime, Konietzko, one of the shows creators, agrees that it attempted to reflect anime aesthetics and culture:
Is referring to Avatar: The Legend Of Korra as an anime always incorrect? Those in the Japanese animation industry may be better prepared to assess whether such conduct is disrespectful to Japanese culture.

Why Legend Of Korra Season 5 Never Happened
Legend of Korra had a troubled relationship with Nickelodeon from the start. While Avatar: The Last Airbender was promised a three-season run with potential for a fourth, which was ultimately scrapped. Legend of Korra was never guaranteed anything past the original one-season order.
Nickelodeon eventually gave the show a total of 52 episodes and 4 seasons, but as the rating forLegend of Korra rapidly declined, season 5 never happened. When Nickelodeon pulled Legend of Korra from the air without warning in the middle of season 3 and released season 4 entirely online, It became clear that the show had no future on the network.
Although Nickelodeon never officially canceled Legend of Korra, It systemically undermined the success of the show. Even before pulling Legend of Korra off the air, Nickelodeon was continuously changing the date and time that the show aired, and did almost no promotion for it.
Even despite Nickelodeans sabotage of Legend of Korra season 5 may not have happened anyway, as DiMartino and Konietzko were ready to work outside of their creative partnership. As a result of the shows soft cancellation or due to its low ratings, Legend of Korra season 5 never moved forward but the story did continue after the show ended in a three-part graphic novel, Legend of Korra: Turf Wars.

The Recap Sequence: The Fire Nation Play
Its a common technique in television shows to have a recap sequence explain whats currently going on. However, some older anime have an episode or two entirely dedicated to summarizing the events so far. This usually happens before entering more serious storylines. For instance, Gundam SEED had two recap episodes explain the stakes before proceeding to the more climactic portions of its storylines.
However, Avatar didnt even need a strict recap episode per se. Rather, in Season 3, a Fire Nation play explained the way the world saw events happen across the seasons. In turn, this play demonstrated a hilarious parodied version of the characters personalities and their take on the stories, even Uncle Iroh!

Magi: The Labyrinth Of Magic
While bending isnt magic per se, it does operate similarly to other magical systems. Following the adventures of Aladdin, Alibaba, and Morgiana this anime is largely based on the stories from 1001 Arabian Nights.

Hungry for adventure and eager to see the world, the heroes travel the world in search of dungeons and come into contact with diverse cultures and characters along the way. If that kind of rich lore, somewhat based in reality, is to your liking then you might want to give Magi a shot. The anime also deals with some of the themes present in Avatar, like friendship and familial bonds.

Korras Polarized Reception Was Mired In Sexism From The Beginning
Korra, like its title character itself, had a lot to live up to. The Peabody-winning animated fantasy series Airbender has been a beloved favorite ever since its original three-season run on Nickelodeon from 20052008. Set in a fantasy world mainly based on Asian cultures, Airbender was acclaimed for its sensitive multicultural storytelling, which revolved around a team of benders people who can manipulate the four elements using their powers to stop an aggressive, militarized nation from its violent conquest of neighboring countries. In addition to carefully avoiding harmful Orientalist tropes, the show took pains to depict its various cultural allegories as distinct. And with a pre-planned, three-season story arc, it got to deeply invest in both its world-building and its characters over time, allowing it to evolve organically to a deeply satisfying conclusion.
Legend of Korra was an ambitious follow-up much like its main character. If Airbenders main character, Aang, is a lovable, sweet-tempered boy, Korra is an irascible, cocky, rash teen girl. Aang is a lovable all-powerful kid who grows steadily into his identity and powers Korra has to learn to be the Avatar through a series of grievous mistakes and errors in judgment. With swagger, braggadocio, and seemingly endless willpower and strength, she sported traits that would make her an ideal traditional hero if shed been a traditional male hero with a traditional male hero arc.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime
This is an isekai anime, and although it might get overshadowed by the genre’s staples, it’s still a fun watch. An ordinary businessman gets reborn as a blob of blue jelly with magical powers, and he resolves to use his new life to create a better world for all.
His name is Rimuru Tempest, and he launches an ambitious program to bring the feuding races of this fantasy world together and create a kingdom of equality and peace. It’s like Civilization, but in isekai, and there are plenty of cool fight scenes, too.

What Counts As An Anime
Anime is a Japanese word for both hand-drawn and computer-generated animation, according to Wikipedia. Anime is a general word that refers to any animated works, regardless of style or place of origin. However, outside of Japan and in English, the word anime is a slang term for Japanese animation and only applies to Japanese animation.
Anime is a diverse medium with its own set of production methods that have developed in response to new technology. Its a blend of graphic design, character development, cinematography, and other cutting-edge techniques. Anime production puts a higher focus on location detail and the use of camera effects such as panning, zooming, and angle views than Western animation.
In his book Anime: A History, Jonathan Clements, an anime historian, admits that the issue may get more challenging at times due to the traditions that the world has learned to identify with. To make this argument more accessible and less academic, define anime as Japanese animated works produced at anime studios and showing certain traditions and characteristics connected with the anime style.
Physical features are notoriously exaggerated in anime art. In general, the physical features of the characters may be used to distinguish an anime from a cartoon. Characters in anime and manga feature large eyes, long hair, and elongated limbs, as well as dramatically created speech bubbles, speed lines, and onomatopoeic, exclamatory typography .
What Legend Of Korra Does Better Than Avatar The Last Airbender

The Avatar mythos includes very little on empowered surnames, but there is something about the Earthbending prodigy’s ability to balance both the good and the bad that should be noted. Growing up with an absent mother can’t be easy, but with every harsh truth brought on by the Beifong name, there are an equal number of perks that helped guide Lin and Suyin into their own versions of success.
Princess Mononoke: The Lack Of Villains
Granted, any fan asked to recall “a villain” of Avatar will name multiple characters and factions across the two series. However, villains such as The Last Airbender‘s Azuka or Korra‘s Zaheer are far from stereotypical cartoon bad guys. Interestingly enough, creators DiMartino and Konietzko confirmed in a magazine interview that this concept is intentional.
Moreover, Konietzko stated that Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke played a huge role in this narrative direction.
As fans recall, this film shows the perspective of both forest gods and humans who want to profit from said forests. Similar to Princess Mononoke, Avatar‘s villains only become as such due to their conflicting interests with the protagonists. However, some aspects of their viewpoints even backstories have a way of resonating with fans and realistic ideologies.

The Tournament Of Power: Earthbender Fights Pro
Tournaments are a staple in shonen anime, especially when there’s a ton of characters with a ton of power to show off. When done right, a tournament is also a great excuse to help characters show “hidden power” or even evolve. At its core, a straightforward brawl becomes less confusing than a pure narrative arc. In turn, it makes sense for Avatar to take some cues with this trope.
Granted, it’s Aang’s journey to find an Earthbending teacher that brings him in a short stint in an Earthbender tournament. Moreover, it’s The Legend of Korra that really had a formal tournament arc in the form of Pro-Bending. While creators have not specifically mentioned following anime for these tournament stories, the medium certainly has a history of following this trend.
Perk: The Avatars Respects The Beifong Name
Avatar: The Last Airbender sets the stage for an international fandom that continues to break down the barrier between western and eastern animation styles. It is an iconic series with iconic characters. Toph Beifong is one of the many characters fans recognize by name and one of the few who appear in both the original and sequel series.
Toph’s adventures alongside the Avatar earned the Beifong name respect in canon and real life. This respect was passed down to Suyin and Lin alongside Toph’s surname. This pair might have had a few mom issues, but the legend of Toph Beifong opened up the door to their fandom in real life and pulled in the respect of Avatar Korra before either of them met the powerful young bender.

The Innovation Of Technology
As we mentioned previously, the first season of the Legend of Korra established a world wherein benders were common place, with those who didn’t have the ability to manipulate the elements were placed into a lower class than those that could. With the Fire Nation, and Fire Lord Ozai specifically, their motivations were somewhat simplistic in their bid for world domination, but the forces of Amon were a little different. They essentially had started a “class war” within the first season of the Legend of Korra, presenting the latest Avatar with a unique problem that took more than simply being the best bender.
While the battle between technology and bending wasn’t as prominent in the following seasons, the conflict present in season one was so original and thought provoking that it’s hard not to see why it makes Legend of Korra surpass Avatar in this respect.
Can’t Defeat: Natsu Dragneel
Like Charon, Natsu Dragneel is dedicated to the way of fire and he uses Dragon Slayer magic in combat. Not only is he immune to enemy fire, he can even eat it, gaining strength and revitalizing himself. He can use a variety of devastating flame-based moves to blast his enemies apart, even dragons.
Mako will lose to Natsu for the same reason he would to Charon: the fact that his enemy gets stronger when exposed to fire. Natsu can even use lightning of his own, since he borrowed the powers of Laxus Dreyar, so he’s resistant to Mako’s lightning bending as well.

Anime Is Not A Subgenre Of Animation
True, Avatar has many anime elements but not all anime. Avatar, like other anime series, has a magical system, choreographed anime-style battle scenes, unique antagonists, and coming-of-age themes, with protagonists seeking to better their world and themselves.
However, an equal number of anime works are devoid of the aforementioned characteristics. Fantasy anime, especially those promoted as shnen, are often linked with these tropes. Although a shnen is designed for a young male audience, it is not always viewed by this group.
This is the default anime style for some, because to the popularity of shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, and Naruto. Anime, on the other hand, isnt only for fantasy shnen coming-of-age stories. Certain works with a slice of life sensibility convey simple tales that might easily be translated to a different media.
Other, a horror film, depicts current small-town views in darker, more muted tones. Adult works with a harsher, more realistic animation style, such as Death Note, which lack fanciful magic or coordinated combat, are nevertheless classified as anime since they meet the previously mentioned criteria for works produced in Japan.
Given the lack of a comprehensive list of anime traits, its difficult to claim that any work was influenced by anime in general. This isnt correct.
