Episode 1: The Garden Where It All Began
Zero Two and Squad 13 returns to the Garden to undergo tests. She is anxious and scours throughout the library, looking for a picture book. She begins biting her nails and Hiro asks her what is wrong. She corners him against a wall and asks him to kiss her, and leans into him. However, she holds back when he notices her canines and coldly turns away.
At the lab, Hachi tells Zero Two that she will undergo thorough tests but she asks for a pass. Nana says they can keep putting it off. The squad is greeted by the 9s and Alpha asks her if she came for maintenance but she ignores him. She later fights against a group of soldiers who try to take her into the lab. One tranquilizes her and they hold her down.
A klaxosaur appears near the Garden and the squad is sent to sortie. Zero Two completely ignores orders and brutally kills it. She keeps stabbing the klaxosaur and repeatedly screams for it to die, shocking Hiro and the others. The next day, Zero Two begins destroying every mirror in Miltisteinn and the mirror Hiro have her as a gift. The squad later goes against another klaxosaur but when Zero Two again starts to lose control, Hiro tries restraining her. She fights back, screaming he is merely her fodder and she is going to become human so she can meet with her darling from before. Their minds intersect and she begins strangling Hiro, who starts to see her memories.

Perfect: They Are The Only Ones Compatible With Each Other
Hiro is the only one who can pilot a Franxx with Zero Two safely, with all of Zero Two’s previous partners dying from piloting with her once.
The reasoning behind why Hiro and Zero Two can pilot a Franxx is explained later on in the series and shows why they are the only ones who can pilot with the other. Just as Zero Two can only pilot a Franxx with Hiro, Hiro can only pilot a Franxx with Zero Two.

Episode 0: Shooting Star Moratorium
Zero Two tells Dr. FRANXX that they didn’t have to come all the way. Nana introduces Hiro to Dr. FRANXX, the creator of FRANXX. She begins to introduce a boy, but he stops her. He approaches Hiro and says that he’s the first person to survive Zero Two. He says that he has an interest in them. Hachi tells the doctor that Strelizia and Code 002 are transferred into Plantation 13’s purview. He waves at him and says that the geezers already told him. When Hachi announces that they’re officially partners, Zero Two hugs Hiro.
Dr. FRANXX tells Hiro not to let him consume his emotions if he wants to always be her partner. Otherwise, he’ll suffer.

Later, after the successful kissing with Plantation 26, Squad 13 is given a special vacation. Zero Two, along with a majority of the other children, is excited to be at the ocean. She pulls Hiro to the water. She splashes him and they laugh together.
Hiro follows Zero Two into the water and the three boys begin watching them. She notes how nice it feels to swim in the ocean. Hiro seems embarrassed when he looks at her and she asks what’s wrong. He says she looks good, but he can’t look her in the eyes. She thanks him for all he did for her.
The parasites are led to a town.
Back at the beach, food had been delivered. They all begin eating and Goro hands Zero Two a shish kabob. She tells Hiro that she’s going to go swimming before running off to the sea.

Episode 1: The Bird That Shares Wings
Her face is deathly pale, her eyes blood red and her horns long enough to touch the ceiling. Hiro tries to connect, but he gets no response. He holds her horns and asks to be taken to her seeing her memories.
She cannot remember things but begins to when she recognizes familiar actions. She licks her wounds in a similar way. Seeing her book, Zero Two begins eating it. She learns the word “boku,” and Zero Two, and “darling.” She remembers him getting attacked and begins crying.

Inside the mountain klaxosaur, they find that its core is a collective mass of cores. A large hand suddenly shoots up from the ground. 9’a laughs and says that it reacted quickly. It crushed the plantation, leaving behind a pile of debris. Squad 13 was lucky enough to still be standing as they stood between the hand’s digit.
Am I More Human To You Now
Zero Two wanted to join in on the “human fight” during the “Boys x Girls” episode where squad 13 created a line through the middle of their home. When Zero Two finally joined, she pulled a prank on the boys and girls, throwing their clothes all over the room. She had never experienced anything like it before and asked Hiro if she was more human to him now.

Because of their skirmish and Zero Two’s unexpected involvement, the boys realized they relied on and wanted to take care of their partners, and the girls realized their lives were on the line every day and teamwork with the boys is key to survival and looking to the future.

Episode 0: What It Means To Connect
“You were incredible, Darling~”
Zero Two unexpectedly visits Miltisteinn to have breakfast with Hiro, but much to the bemusement of the other parasites. She completely covers her meal in honey and proceeds to eat it with her bare hands to the disgust of all the Parasites except Hiro. She is approached by Zorome in an attempt to “hit on her” while putting down Hiro. She begins to wipe her honeyed hand on his uniform, mortifying Zorome. Zero Two takes the pitcher of honey and starts sitting with Hiro and begins pouring honey all over his breakfast as well. When asked by Hiro as to whether or not he actually was able to activate and pilot Strelizia with her, she reassures him, stating that he was “amazing” and calls him “darling”, much to the shock of the other Parasites .
Nana enters the room and informs them that Zero Two is on “standby” awaiting further orders from HQ. She also commands her to go back to her own table before Zero Two leaves with her. On the elevator, Nana criticizes her for running off. Zero Two antagonizes Nana by stating that she merely wanted to have breakfast with her darling. Nana orders her to avoid the parasites, as they are nowhere ready for Zero Twos league. They arrive at the city and Zero Two remarks how she feels like she suffocated there.

The Importance Of Nothing
So with that out of the way, we can now take a more serious look at our question: why is zero so revered and generally made so powerful?
At first glance, it would be easy to say its because zero is used for prototype characters/weapons, such as with Wing Gundam Zero and Mega Man Xs Zero. After all, its a fairly often-used plot device for the prototype to be better than the mass-production unit.
On the surface this seems like a pretty good theory, but if you actually take a look at all the characters this over-powered Zero theme runs across, its apparently that the vast majority of them are not actually prototypes. So there must be some sort of deeper reason.

Zero Two Is The Tallest Girl In The Squad
Zero Two is taller than any of the other female members in the squad. She is described as being tall and athletic. She is even taller than most of the boys, and she towers above her consort Hiro. This seems to reflect their masculine girl, feminine boy pairing. The more refined Hiro got an aggressive, rebellious, and somewhat outrageous girlfriend. And if being an Amazon is not enough, her Klaxosaur blood enables her to throw their misbehaving squad members around. She almost killed Ichigo, though this might please most fans.

She Was Originally Designed With Black Hair
Aside from the horns, the eye markings, and the cute sets of fangs, the pink hair is another distinct feature of our beastly babe. It is hard to imagine Zero Two missing her brightly-colored crown, but during her initial concept design, Zero Two was presented as having black hair. In fact, as Masayoshi Tanaka explained, they first conceived the character as a “badass transfer student who was more muted and subdued. Back then, Zero Twos initial design was a small and quiet girl who wore a black uniform that matched her flowing black hair. Eventually, the team decided that the design didn’t work, and they dropped the black-haired Zero Two. We then ended up with the striking and more colorful Zero Two, who had more personality.
And by the way, the black-haired Zero Two is the stuff of nightmares. She looks more demonic and sinister!

Klaxosaurs And Humanity War
As a century of warfare passed, squads of parasites were equipped with magma energy weapons to weapon use against the Klaxosaurs and the squads were initially killed off in order to destroy the Klaxosaurs. However, this strategy was tossed in order to prolong the stockpile of parasites as the Klaxosaur attacks increased. Conflicts with Klaxosaurs became a normal expectation of parasites but the adult population gradually forgot the existence of the Klaxosaurs due to their tedium lifestyle in the plantations.
In private, APE made preparations to build Hringhorni from cores of Klaxosaurs as the ultimate weapon to annihilate the entire Klaxosaur population. Upon learning the Gran Crevasse harbored a massive weapon called Star Entity that 001 had intended to use to destroy the humans, APE sets its sight on seizing the Gran Crevasse and gaining Star Entity. However, Dr. FRANXX realized there was an issue; as a Klaxosaur weapon, it required a Klaxo Sapien to operate it, which caused the project to be delayed for a long time. Dr. FRANXX resolved this issue when he managed to obtain strands of 001s hair following an encounter with her, and with her DNA, he created a human-Klaxosaur hybrid, Zero Two.
Episode 0: Darling In The Franxx
Zero Two calmed by a fully-healed Hiro
On the dawn of the mission, Hiro spots Zero Two exiting the pistil changing room. She glances back at him but doesn’t approach as Ichigo is present. Hiro quickly ends his conversation with Ichigo and meets up with Zero Two. She asks him if he is ready and he affirms he is.
During the defence of the kissing, Zero Two and Hiro and oversee the battle while guarding the main pipeline, much to her boredom. Zero Two remarks that the Plantation 13 parasites’ tactics are all over the place and that they’re barely hanging in there, as they are being overwhelmed by just 4 Conrad-class klaxosaurs, in contrast to the other squad’s calculated and efficient method of combat. Hiro asks Zero Two why she fights klaxosaurs because it looks like she enjoys it. After a moment of silence, she replies that the reason is that she’s a monster. Zero Two shoots the question back at an unsure Hiro, who shrugs and states it’s to protect Papa and all the adults in the plantations. Zero Two remarks his answer is lame. Hiro proposes that if the squad needs their help they should move out, to which Zero Two agrees.
In the aftermath, a fatigued Zero Two is carried by Hiro of out Strelizia this time. She hears Hiro tell her that he wants to be her wings and he’ll be fine afterwards. Standing apart from the celebration, Zero Two watches them. She turns to the Strelizia contemplating that she has to kill more and more klaxosaurs.

Episode 1: Punishment And Confession
Zero Two and Hiro realize they knew each other as children. She catches him before he collapses and asks if he’s her darling from her childhood and is horrified thinking of what she had done. Ichigo suddenly interrupts them and throws her off of him and into Goro. He asks if she’s alright as Ichigo tries to revive Hiro. When they return to the docking facility, Hiro is taken for treatment. Zero Two realizes what Hiro meant when he said he wanted to understand her better.
Zero Two is banned from seeing Hiro
Hachi announced they must neutralize every klaxosaur inhabiting Gran Crevasse. Nana says that it is a joint operation with the 9’s and FRANXX squad from each plantation. He says that Squad 13 is scheduled to be part of the sixth wave. Nana says it will be their most difficult mission and Ichigo raises her hand. She asks that Zero Two is removed from Squad 13 as of that mission and, if not, Squad 13 will not participate in the operation. Nana says that she was set to return to the 9’s as of the mission anyway. Zero Two protests, but the parasites stop her from seeing him.
When Hiro gets up, he is stopped by Miku. Zero Two is also guarded and prevented from leaving her room. She tells him that Zero Two is returning to the 9’s the next night.
