Ash Lynx And Eiji Okumura

Haikyuu!! How The Characters Came To Be Gay

The most recent LGBT rep we’ve seen of late was in Banana Fish – which was announced in October 2017 and aired in July 2018.

Banana Fish is more of an adventurous gang story than a romance story, but there is indeed a gay romance between the two main characters from what I gather. Words of love, uncensored kisses between the two and overall feeling of romance between the two is all the evidence we need to determine Ash and Eiji are indeed canonly gay characters.

The kiss they share and their relationship is even more revolutionary than Yuri on Ice, which premiered two years before, While I admit to having not watched it, the romance between these two characters in a world of violence has been one of the most talked about anime of this year.

Banana Fish

While some of these may be a stretch, it’s a start. The LGBT community has lacked representation in media for too long to let any get by without being discussed, which was why this article was written.

We need LGBT rep now more than ever, it’s nice to see that the anime industry has become more and more accepting over the years despite the initial teasing and often degrading jokes included in anime before.

While I haven’t watched a few of these, I did extensive research regarding each one and tried to summarize the relationships as well as I could. If you see a mistake or have suggestions for other LGBT anime/Characters, please comment below.

Yuri Katsuki And Victor Nikiforov

Face it – you knew this was coming, Yuri on Ice may not have had the best animation, but we all have to admit that the canonly gay main characters threw us for a loop. Yuri Katsuki, an ice-skater braving the international stage, finds himself in the mentorship of Victor Nikiforov, one of the top international skaters. Not to spoil anything, but as it turns out, Victor Nikiforov was enchanted the first time he saw Yuri. As the show goes on, the te of them not only kiss but get engaged .

Yuri and Victor really are the gay power couple we needed in this day and age, and theirs is one of the most obvious relationships and examples of LGBT romance we could ask for.

While it may not be explicitly stated, Haruhi is a gender revolutionary and shows that it really doesn’t matter how you look or act, it only matters who you are on the inside. Though this series came out in 2006, Haruhi is an LGBT revolutionary, as well as her drag queen father Ranka. Though the term ‘tranny’ was used in the anime, these two were still true LGBT heroes in a time when there wasn’t much rep out there.

Sailor Uranus And Neptune

If you’ve been a fan of anime since you were a kid and have been following along with LGBT rep in anime since then, you’ll know this one.

Released in 1992, Sailor Moon primarily follows a group of girls that transform into superheroes and fight crime. One of the most popular anime of its time and considered a timeless classic, it’s surprising that it would actually have an LGBT couple that was canon and openly discussed.

Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune are described as lovers in the original adaption of the series and are even shown this way in the manga. Haruka is the butch lesbian goddess that we deserve, what with her short hair and masculine way of dressing. She’s described more of as a tomboy, but we all know a butch lesbian when we see one.

In the English dub, it does describe the two as cousins rather than lovers, but the dub is irrelevant if the original says they’re lovers. We’re sorry girls, America just wasn’t ready back then.

Anime: Wandering Son

Few anime have been as daring when it comes to tackling the trans experience as Wandering Son, a show about two trans friends discovering their gender identities and growing through the years.

Growing up is hard.

But it can be doubly hard in a world that doesnt always understand you.

Wandering Son tackles difficult themes like body dysmorphia and the struggle to find your place in a world full of gender norms that dont necessarily apply to you.

Yoshino and Shuichi can be profoundly relatable for both trans people, and almost everyone else, but for different reasons.

Theyre both very human. And they remind us of the importance of having someone close who cares and tries to understand what youre going through.

The 15 Coolest Lgbt Relationships In Anime

If you’re an LGBT fan of animation, you know visibility is important. These couples were the Romeo and Juliet we never had.

If youre an LGBT kid that grew up with anime, you probably found a show or two that had some pretty validating characters when it came to gender and sexuality. There were some anime couples out there that represented us is different ways and had the romances that we really wanted. In honor of Sailor Moon Crystal getting green-lit for a fourth season, lets go back to the sweet, terrifying, and heartbreaking LGBT couples from animes past.

We are well aware that some of these couples are still in the ambiguous non-canon category because the nature of their relationship has not been revealed by writers or explicitly mentioned in the anime itself. However, not everything has to be said, and were basing a few of these entries on very clear body language, actions, and behaviors between characters.

There may be a few little spoilers here and there throughout this list, so be wary!

    Sailor Neptune & Sailor Uranus

    Anime: Sailor Moon

Considering it was released in 1992, you might be surprised to learn there was a lesbian couple in Sailor Moon.

Surely you missed it if you didnt pay that much attention.

Still, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune fit the shojo-ai trope of a princely character with a traditionally feminine and delicate one to a T.

Funimation made some small changes to the original English Sailor Moon dubs script to make the couple into cousins but honestly, I think that backfired.

Now its gay and a bit weird too.

The tension is clearly still there!

    Haruhi And Ranka Fujioka

This one might be a stretch, but I can’t help but put them in here, my favorite dad and daughter duo. It is canon that Haruhi Fujioka and her father just do not care about gender, what with Ranka being a drag queen and Haruhi destroying gender stereotypes with the classic line, ” Besides, it doesn’t really matter, does it? Why should I care about appearances and labels anyway? It’s what’s on the inside that counts. ” as well as ” Even though I gave my first kiss to a girl by a weird series of events, the night had a good feel to it.” and “Listen, Senpai, I don’t really care whether you guys recognize me as a boy or a girl. In my opinion, it’s more important for a person to be recognized for who they are, rather than what sex they are.”

Haikyuu Timeskip Confirms One Surprise Marriage

Haruichi Furudate really threw us all for a loop with not only a major timeskip that moved the series several years into the future, but revealed that this would be Haikyuu’s final arc overall. But while it initially brushed over the final years of Shoyo Hinata and the rest of the boys’ volleyball team’s final years at Karasuno High School and moved them all into their future careers, recent chapters of the manga have featured a series of reunions that have helped to fill in the gaps of what each of our favorites is up to now.

As each of the older versions of our favorites gather together for a big match between Hinata and Kageyama’s current pro teams at Sendai, there are a few new surprises at every turn as Chapter 379 confirmed a surprising marriage that was literally years in the making. It turns out that all of Tanaka’s efforts to get close to Kiyoko paid off as the two of them have gotten married!

WAITTTTTT I DIDNT NOTICE HER NAME IS KIYOKO TANAKA HOLYYY

    drou

But as Haikyuu has never been a romance led series, it’s great to see that at least one couple has been not only solidified but taken to such an extent. Though as the timeskip literally skipped over the development between the two leading to the marriage, there’s definitely a need to see this story between them explored someday!

    Nitori Shuichi And Takatsuki Yoshino

TONIGHT I’M FCKING YOU | Haikyuu Yaoi

Initially released in 2011, the series Wandering Son follows Nitori Shuichi, a young trans girl, and Takatsuki Yoshino, a young trans boy. The show deals with serious issues regarding gender identity, dysphoria and the overall problems of growing up as a young trans person. While it is primarily focused on the kids’ gender identities, the series also focuses on their romantic emotions towards each other and overall their lives as they go through being both trans and growing up.

Though I haven’t finished the series for myself, I do recommend it for any trans individuals, especially younger ones, as it is a good series to relate to and has the trans representation that many other series do not.

    Toya Kinomoto & Yukito Tsukihiro

    Anime: Card Captor Sakura

Even if you were watching a particularly censored dub or paying zero attention, youll remember Toya and Yukitos relationship.

I remember being a bit taken aback whenever they interacted in the show.

It was the first time I saw such a normalized portrayal of a gay relationship, which speaks volumes about how scarce representation used to be for the LGBTQ+ community.

Honestly, anything involving Yukito was gay and unashamed. Even Syaoran gets nervous and blushes whenever hes around!

Snow White With The Red Hair

Disney’s Snow White is a much darker film than it seems. The evil witch tries to murder the innocent princess for no remotely sympathetic or relatable reason. Meanwhile, Snow White herself needs to journey through a menacing forest to get to the dwarves’ cottage.

Snow White with the Red Hair isn’t nearly as dark. Nor does it have any dwarves. In fact, Snow White in this family anime is Shirayuki, an herbalist with rare red hair. She runs away from her home when she’s forced to be a concubine for Prince Raji. While there is a poisoned apple, it’s not a major part of the story. Furthermore, there’s more character development with this Snow White than the original.
