Zero Two and Hiro count as childhood friends as they met when they were smaller, but forgot about the encounter because their memories were erased. Because of Hiro, Zero Two strived to become a human and meet “that boy” once again, which turned out to be Hiro.

The way Zero Two speaks in Japanese is also because of Hiro. While women usually use “watashi” or “atashi” to refer to themselves, Zero Two uses the more boyish “boku” akin to how Hiro refers to himself. This is a neat bit of foreshadowing.
Horrible: Zero Two Can Be A Bit Obsessive
As soon as Zero Two discovers she can only pilot a Franxx with Hiro and vice-versa, her attitude towards him changes drastically. She goes from being uninterested in Hiro to clinging to him 24/7.
She also begins to live with everyone, albeit they sleep in different dorms and never talking to anyone else until later in Darling in the Franxx. Zero Two’s obsession with him was even apparent to the other children as she acted a bit too friendly with him at times.
Zorome: He Was 15 In The Beginning & 25 After The 10
Zorome was introduced as a childish young boy whose loyalty lay not with his teammates, but with the strict adults. He was obsessed with growing up quickly so that he could live his dream of being a grownup.
When hes 25 years old, he becomes a teacher and hes shown standing at the entrance of the school, ushering in the new students. He gets into a friendly argument with two girls and is berated by Miku for neglecting his duties as a teacher.

Perfect: Hiro Is The One Who Humanized Her
When the audience is first introduced to Zero Two in the beginning of Darling in the Franxx, Hiro meets her while she is in the lake naked. The interaction between them was less than ordinary and showed her character right away.
Zero Two did not care about others or what happened to her partners after she killed them. However, after starting to love Hiro, she was shown to open up her heart and change slowly.

Episode : The City Of Eternity
She and Squad 13 return to the plantation after a battle. As Hiro exits Strelizia, he notices she doesnt get out and looks gloomy. He asks if something is wrong and she says no. Nana calls the parasites down because she has some news for them.
Nana informs the parasites that Papa has decided to award them medals for their achievements, meaning they will be allowed into the city. While the parasites are excited, Zero Two is indifferent and starts walking away. Nana stops her to tell her that its perfect timing to arrange Zero Two to undergo testing. Zero Two retorts she hates those tests as they make her feel loopy afterwards and she says she is fine before leaving.
Everyone learns Zorome is found
During the ceremony, the mayor thanks Zero Two but she ignores him. The squad is allowed to venture trough the city. The others marvel at the city but Zero Two doesnt care, as she tells Hiro how lifeless the city is..
Episode 1: Punishment And Confession
Zero Two and Hiro realize they knew each other as children. She catches him before he collapses and asks if he’s her darling from her childhood and is horrified thinking of what she had done. Ichigo suddenly interrupts them and throws her off of him and into Goro. He asks if she’s alright as Ichigo tries to revive Hiro. When they return to the docking facility, Hiro is taken for treatment. Zero Two realizes what Hiro meant when he said he wanted to understand her better.
Zero Two is banned from seeing Hiro
Hachi announced they must neutralize every klaxosaur inhabiting Gran Crevasse. Nana says that it is a joint operation with the 9’s and FRANXX squad from each plantation. He says that Squad 13 is scheduled to be part of the sixth wave. Nana says it will be their most difficult mission and Ichigo raises her hand. She asks that Zero Two is removed from Squad 13 as of that mission and, if not, Squad 13 will not participate in the operation. Nana says that she was set to return to the 9’s as of the mission anyway. Zero Two protests, but the parasites stop her from seeing him.
When Hiro gets up, he is stopped by Miku. Zero Two is also guarded and prevented from leaving her room. She tells him that Zero Two is returning to the 9’s the next night.

Episode 1: The Beast And The Prince
Hiro connects deeply with the consciousness of Zero Two and catches a glimpse of memories that she retained but he forgot from their childhood. Hiro sees how Zero Two endured torturous experiments from Dr. FRANXX and received a picture book called The Beast and the Prince, which was her one source of comfort, from a caretaker. Zero Two and Hiro caught their first glimpse of each other when she was being dragged into the lab, where she experienced painful experiments if a laser blowing a hole through her hand. A caretaker tries to take her book from her but Zero Two fought back until the woman gave up.
After suffering from electroshock treatment, Hiro helped her escape by breaking the window in her room and Zero Two notes that was her first time experiencing the outside world and the environment confused her, as it was different. She tried eating a mouse and impulsively bit Hiros hand when he tried to stop her but he soon realized she didnt understand what he was saying. He tried thinking of a name for her his first choice was Oni but then thought of Zero Two, although he said it wasnt good either. She tried pronouncing Zero Two but couldnt because of her speech impairment. Hiro then suggested they go somewhere far away.

Ichigo: She Was 15 In The Beginning & 25 After The 10
Ichigo was a young girl who used to spend a lot of her time torn between her feelings for Hiro and her duty as the squad leader. After she was rejected by Hiro, Goro was there to comfort her and the two eventually ended up marrying each other.
After the 10-year time skip, a heavily pregnant Ichigo is seen in the hospital with Ikuno by her side, who wonders what the baby will look like. She also gets a surprise visit from Futoshi and gets to meet his new family as well.
Episode 0: What It Means To Connect
“You were incredible, Darling~”
Zero Two unexpectedly visits Miltisteinn to have breakfast with Hiro, but much to the bemusement of the other parasites. She completely covers her meal in honey and proceeds to eat it with her bare hands to the disgust of all the Parasites except Hiro. She is approached by Zorome in an attempt to “hit on her” while putting down Hiro. She begins to wipe her honeyed hand on his uniform, mortifying Zorome. Zero Two takes the pitcher of honey and starts sitting with Hiro and begins pouring honey all over his breakfast as well. When asked by Hiro as to whether or not he actually was able to activate and pilot Strelizia with her, she reassures him, stating that he was “amazing” and calls him “darling”, much to the shock of the other Parasites .
Nana enters the room and informs them that Zero Two is on “standby” awaiting further orders from HQ. She also commands her to go back to her own table before Zero Two leaves with her. On the elevator, Nana criticizes her for running off. Zero Two antagonizes Nana by stating that she merely wanted to have breakfast with her darling. Nana orders her to avoid the parasites, as they are nowhere ready for Zero Twos league. They arrive at the city and Zero Two remarks how she feels like she suffocated there.

Episode 0: Shooting Star Moratorium
Zero Two tells Dr. FRANXX that they didn’t have to come all the way. Nana introduces Hiro to Dr. FRANXX, the creator of FRANXX. She begins to introduce a boy, but he stops her. He approaches Hiro and says that he’s the first person to survive Zero Two. He says that he has an interest in them. Hachi tells the doctor that Strelizia and Code 002 are transferred into Plantation 13’s purview. He waves at him and says that the geezers already told him. When Hachi announces that they’re officially partners, Zero Two hugs Hiro.
Dr. FRANXX tells Hiro not to let him consume his emotions if he wants to always be her partner. Otherwise, he’ll suffer.

Later, after the successful kissing with Plantation 26, Squad 13 is given a special vacation. Zero Two, along with a majority of the other children, is excited to be at the ocean. She pulls Hiro to the water. She splashes him and they laugh together.
Hiro follows Zero Two into the water and the three boys begin watching them. She notes how nice it feels to swim in the ocean. Hiro seems embarrassed when he looks at her and she asks what’s wrong. He says she looks good, but he can’t look her in the eyes. She thanks him for all he did for her.
The parasites are led to a town.
Back at the beach, food had been delivered. They all begin eating and Goro hands Zero Two a shish kabob. She tells Hiro that she’s going to go swimming before running off to the sea.

Perfect: They Are Destined To Be Together
Zero Two and Hiro are destined to be together no matter how you spin it. This is further shown in the last episode of Darling in the Franxx. While the other children ended up either dead or with someone they loved, Zero Two and Hiro died.
However, they were shown to reincarnate thousands of years later and meet again under the cherry blossom tree they made a promise at, showing their souls are meant to be together.

Miku: She Was 15 In The Beginning & 25 After The 10
Miku was introduced as an aggressive and strongly opinionated character who was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in, even if it meant standing alone.
In episode 24, she is 10 years older and is a teacher along with Zorome, who helps usher in their new students. She reunites with her old squad and reminisces about the good old days, as well as discussing the sacrifice Hiro and Zero Two made.
Perfect: They Inspire Each Other
Zero Two’s dearest wish is to become a human. Hiro wants to prove he is not useless and can pilot a Franxx. The aspect of longing to be accepted is what brings them together and makes each other truly understand each other.
Because they inspire each other to do better, albeit their path may be rocky sometimes, there is no doubt that this makes them a better couple.

In truth, the city was a giant laboratory, where citizens were knowingly and unknowingly experimented on by a secret cabal of scientists who wanted to create the mythical Level 6 Esper. As a result, they dehumanized everyone.
In fact, technology’s dominance over the city’s populace was the cause of many conflicts. If Kamijou Touma, Misaka Mikoto, and their friends fought against the amoral scientists’ deadly projects, extremists from the magic side like God’s Right Seat of the Roman Catholic Church sought to eradicate all science in the name of their faith.
The Anime That Was Lost To Time
I remember a time when anime was niche. Before Toonami and the advent of high-speed internet, anime felt like an underground secret. If you stumbled across a copy of Ninja Scroll or Appleseed at Blockbuster, you felt like you’d found the lost city of gold. Now that anime is as commonplace as more “traditional” cartoons there’s an impressive array of titles for you to choose from. Even though modern anime’s polish and kinetic fight scenes have their appeal, I still crave the style of anime I grew up on. Consequently, I’m always on the prowl for shows and movies that might have slipped under my radar from the late 80s and early 90s.
In the video linked above, YouTuber Kenny Lauderdale reveals himself as a kindred spirit in my cause by searching for an anime that may or may not exist.
