Should one receive an anime adaptation, even then it could become old news and have no second season in favour of a gamble at the next big hit. So its a pleasant surprise to see something as old as Banana Fish on the slate. And when a studio does go out of its way for an old licence, they will put the full production effort behind it, as is the case here.
The story centres on young AshLynx, a handsome boy adopted by New York City Mafia Don DinoGolzine, who declares that Ash should inherit his empire. The boy is ruthless, resourceful, and charismatic all the qualities he desires in an heir . Unfortunately for the Don, the boy is also rebellious and despises him like the devil. Ash becomes hell-bent on destroying his father and abuser, especially once suspicion arises of his involvement in the death of Ashs brother and a mind control drug called Banana Fish. This dangerous game becomes more personal when he meets Japanese photographer Eiji, with whom he makes fast friends. Eiji has just entered a world of abuse, drugs, and death.

The short story A Perfect Day for Bananafish by J.D. Salinger starts with a back-and-forth dialogue between a mother and daughter where neither party really listens to what the other is saying. The daughter, Muriel, tells her mother about her current trip to Florida, while the mother attempts to convince Muriel to come home due to the unstable mental state of Muriels husband, Seymore, who just returned from war. The dialogue then changes to a young girl named Sybil Carpenter who is driving her mother insane by repeating the phrase See More Glass. Sybils mother releases her and she runs to see Seymore Glass.
Seymore begins a conversation with the young girl and tells her how banana fish swim into holes to get bananas and after eating too many cannot escape the hole. He calls this Banana Fever. Seymore and Sybil part ways and he returns to his shared room with Muriel where he loads a gun and shoots himself in the head.
As readers, we can see how Seymore Glass cannot handle society after returning from war, which causes him to kill himself.
