Kageki Shojo Manga Creator Kumiko Saiki And Anime Director Kazuhiro Yoneda

I Met and Confronted the Creator of Redo of Healer…

The story of Kageki Shojo!! tells the story of aspiring opera actresses attending a school dedicated to refining their talents. It is strongly inspired by the Takarazuka Revue, the famous all-female theater group. ANN spoke to manga artist and how the story was adapted to screen.

? Which element of the world of Shojo Kageki attracted you to using the subject for the manga?

Kumiko Saiki: It all started when my editor suggested I draw a serializing manga about performance arts. I’ve always liked films and dramas dealing with sisterhood, so I decided to set the story in an all-girls music school that prepares people for joining a troupe.

Behind the flamboyant world of a girl’s opera, there are elements that can be harsh or even unhealthy, as we see in Ayako’s story with her weight. How did you balance the sometimes unkind reality and admiration for the shojo kageki ?

Kumiko Saiki: Even if they know exactly what they’re aspiring to, the characters are still teen girls. I think that sometimes they’ll lose sight of what’s around them and make mistakes. That’s why I’m careful in depicting good adults who will reach out to the girls in their hardships and show them the way.

Several characters in Kageki Shojo!! are aspiring otokoyaku actresses ; what do you think it is about each character that makes them suited for otokoyaku roles?

Kazuhiro Yoneda: The ending videos depict a predicted future for each of the characters when they stand on the Kouka Acting Troupe stage.

Astro Boy National Fame And Early Animation

By 1952, Ambassador Atom had proven to be only a mild success in Japan; however, one particular character became extremely popular with young boys: a humanoid robot named Atom. Tezuka received several letters from many young boys. Expecting success with a series based around Atom, Tezuka’s producer suggested that he be given human emotions. One day, while working at a hospital, Tezuka was punched in the face by a frustrated American G.I. This encounter gave Tezuka the idea to include the theme of Atom’s interaction with aliens. On February 4, 1952, Tetsuwan Atom began serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine. The character Atom and his adventures became an instant phenomenon in Japan.

Due to the success of Tetsuwan Atom, in 1953 Tezuka published the shjo mangaRibon no Kishi , serialized in Shojo Club from 1953 to 1956.

In 1954 Tezuka first published what he would consider his life’s work, Phoenix, which originally appeared in Mushi Production Commercial Firm.

Brief History Of Anime

Anime dates back to the birth of Japans film industry in the early 1900s and has emerged as one of Japans major cultural forces over the past century.

Much of the work done in these early years was not the cel animation technique that would come to be the dominant production technique, but a host of other methods: chalkboard drawings, painting directly on the film, paper cut-outs, and so on.

One by one, many of the technologies used today were added to Japanese animated productionssound ; the multiplane camera system; and cel animation. But due to the rise of Japanese nationalism and the start of WWII, most of the animated productions created from the 1930s on were not popular entertainments, but instead were either commercially-oriented;or government propaganda of one type or another.

Hajime Isayama The Creator Of Attack On Titan

Hajime Isayama was born in 1986 and he is 30 years old as of July 2017. Surprisingly, Attack on Titan is his first manga published as a professional manga artist. He managed to create a record-breaking mega hit manga as his debut series.

He was born in Oita prefecture, which most Japanese think of as being a rural and remote place. Take a look at a map of Japan. A long journey from Tokyo towards the west takes you to the cities of Osaka and Kyoto, and you need to travel much further west to get to Oita.

The area where Isayama was born is a structural basin surrounded by mountains, which reminds me of the town surrounded by walls in Attack on Titan. The imagery of Titans surging in from between mountains must have developed in him while he grew up there. Oita was chosen as one of the venues for Attack on Titan exhibition, since he was born there. The people in Oita must be proud of him.

Stamps were issued in Tezuka’s honor in 1997. Also, beginning in 2003, the Japanese toy company Kaiyodo began manufacturing a series of figurines of Tezuka’s creations, including Princess Knight, Unico, the Phoenix, Dororo, Marvelous Melmo, Ambassador Magma, and many others. To date, three series of the figurines have been released.

Tezuka’s legacy has continued to be honored among manga artists and animators. He guided many well-known manga artists, such as Shotaro Ishinomori and Go Nagai. Artists that have cited Tezuka as an influence include Monkey Punch, Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira Toriyama and Naoki Urasawa. From 2003 to 2009, Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki adapted an arc of Astro Boy into the murder mystery series Pluto.

Tezuka was a personal friend of Brazilian comic book artist Mauricio de Sousa. In 2012, Maurício published a two-issue story arc in the Monica Teen comic book featuring some of Tezuka’s main characters, including Astro Boy, Black Jack, Sapphire, and Kimba, joining Monica and her friends in an adventure in the against a smuggling organization chopping down hundreds of trees. This was the first time that Tezuka Productions allowed overseas artists to use Tezuka’s characters.

Toei Animation And Mushi Production

Toei Animation and Mushi Production was founded and produced the first color anime feature film in 1958, Hakujaden .It was released in the US in 1961 as well as Panda and the Magic Serpent. After the success of the project, Toei released a new feature-length animation annually.:101

Toei’s style was characterized by an emphasis on each animator bringing his own ideas to the production. The most extreme example of this is Isao Takahata‘s film Horus: Prince of the Sun . Horus is often seen as the first major break from the normal anime style and the beginning of a later movement of “auteuristic” or “progressive anime” which would eventually involve directors such as Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii.

Osamu Tezuka established Mushi Production in 1961, after Tezuka’s contract with Toei Animation expired. The studio pioneered TV animation in Japan, and was responsible for such successful TV series as Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion, Gok no Daibken and Princess Knight.

Mushi Production also produced the first anime to be broadcast in the United States , although Osamu Tezuka would complain about the restrictions on US television, and the alterations necessary for broadcast.

The city of Takarazuka, Hygo, where Tezuka grew up, opened a museum in his memory. The Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum was inaugurated on April 25, 1994, and has three floors . In the basement there is an “Animation Workshop” in which visitors can make their own animation, and a mockup of the city of Takarazuka and a replica of the table where Osamu Tezuka worked.

Outside of the building’s entrance, there are imitations of the hands and feet of several characters from Tezuka and on the inside, the entry hall, a replica of Princess Knight‘s furniture. On the same floor is a permanent exhibition of manga and a room for the display of anime. The exhibition is divided into two parts: Osamu Tezuka and the city of Takarazuka and Osamu Tezuka, the author.

The second floor contains, along with several exhibitions, a manga library with five hundred works of Tezuka , a video library, and a lounge with decor inspired by Kimba the White Lion.

There is also a glass sculpture that represents the planet Earth and is based on a book written by Tezuka in his childhood called Our Earth of Glass.

Osamu Tezuka Legendary Creator

Osamu Tezuka created a revolution in manga and anime. Born in 1928 in Toyonaka, in Osaka, Japan, he was raised in the nearby city of Takarazuka. From a very early age he loved to draw. When he was eighteen, and enrolled in university as a medical student, he made his debut as a cartoonist with a four panel cartoon strip titled Ma-chan’s Diary. Not too long thereafter, paperback compilations of his longer stories, with titles such as New Treasure Island, Lost World, and Next World, became smash hits, selling what was then unthinkable for comics over 400,000 copies each and making him nationally famous.

Although Osamu Tezuka eventually received his physician’s license, he chose to devote his life to comics and animation rather than practice medicine. In doing so he brought an unusually creative and educated mind to both fields. Particularly in comics, he pioneered long narratives of hundreds, even thousands of pages, bringing “cinematic” art styles and novelistic plots to the medium. By 1950, he had firmly established his position as the leading comics artist of his day when he serialised his now classic work, in the monthly magazine, Manga Shonen. Then, in 1952, he began serialising Mighty Atom, in the young boys’ monthly Shonen. Mighty Atom, which later became known to the world as “Astro Boy,” continued until 1968, becoming one of Tezuka’s most popular and famous works.

He Started Drawing Battles Between Humans And Massive Creatures When He Was A Child

The Attack on Titan Wall Tokyo exhibition was held in 2014 at The Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo. Exhibitions of manga works are on the increase in recent Japan. However, this exhibition was in a different league. There was a long queue to enter the museum every day and the numbers of visitors broke a record. A manga exhibition is rarely this busy and its a great thing to happen. Isayamas personal belongings were exhibited at the exhibition as well.

The photo above shows young Isayamas pictures at the exhibition. He started to draw pictures of humans fighting against massive creatures in his childhood. Attack on Titan is an embodiment of his fantasy indeed. You can even see his name Hajime signed at the top of the picture.

There was a 3D model of Going Merry from the popular Weekly Shonen Jump manga One Piece, at the exhibition. I was impressed on the quality of the finish.

There were clay models of a skull which is reminiscent of the head of a Titan, and a realistic hand. They must be one of his initial images of Titans which I felt were the same in a sense as the Titans in Attack on Titan.

You can see some Japanese calligraphy in the top-right. It says I can at least defeat a dog. Isayama is good at inserting funny bits within a serious storyline and this childhood calligraphy showed his sense of humour.

Many Of Tezukas Best Works Are Still Little

Always arrayed in a beret, thick-rimmed glasses, and a smile, Tezuka was an artistic genius who created more than 700 manga titles comprising 150,000 pages of hand-drawn art and more than 60 anime in his lifetime, making him one of the most prolific Japanese manga creators in history.

The impact of Tezukas career on Japanese culture far exceeds his actual artistry, though his artistry is incredibly influential. But of equal importance is his role in creating the longstanding industry around taking Japanese comics, or manga, developing them into animated Japanese TV series, or anime, and exporting them around the globe.

Tezuka began this work in the late 1960s with his iconic manga Astro Boy, which he adapted into a wildly successful anime. This process of close adaptation, along with the many animation techniques Tezuka pioneered in Japan to speed up the adaptation process, started an industrial tradition that continues into the present; the manga/anime industry, with its distinctive Japanese artistic style and identity, has profoundly shaped Japanese culture.

But even though he isnt a household name, Tezukas influence in the US has been palpable most notably in the works his art style and stories have influenced. Stanley Kubrick admired Tezuka and asked him to serve as the art designer for 2001: A Space Odyssey .
